Remote simultaneous interpreting training with UN interpreters

21.03.2022

From March 14 to March 18, 2022, the students of the Training Programme for Candidates for the Competitive Language Examinations had a simultaneous interpreting training under the guidance of interpreters of the Russian section of the UN Interpretation Service in Vienna. The training was held under the Memorandum of Understanding between the UN and MSLU regarding cooperation in preparing candidates for participation in competitive examinations.

The students of the Programme were translating online broadcast of two-hour sessions of the 65th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs. At the end of the sessions, the students received feedback from the UN interpreters.

Victoria Tuchina, student of the Training Programme for Candidates for the Competitive Language Examinations, says: “It was very interesting to translate in real time changing in pairs, under the conditions as close to real as possible. The peculiarity of interpreting on any fairly narrow topic, in my opinion, is that you just need to know some facts. Therefore, while interpreting, you are trying you "recognize" these facts. As far as the feedback is concerned, it was very valuable to receive first comments of a general nature relevant to everyone, and then move on to individual comments. So each of us could better understand what we need to pay attention to not only in interpreting, but also in technical specifics, for example, in working with a microphone.
