Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia visits MSLU

On April 18, 2022, our university welcomed Greim Meehan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia to the Russian Federation; Keith Pitcher, Second Secretary of the Australian Embassy, and Oleg Son, Political and Economic Section of Australian Embassy. They were cordially received by Rector Irina Kraeva; Vice-Rector for Development and Informatization Anatoly Tsaregorodtsev; Head of International Cooperation and Internationalization Irina Shokina; Professor of English Stylistics, Director of English Language and Cultures Centre Natalya Tokareva, Head of Media Communications Evgenia Struk, and Associate Professor of English Lexicology, Executive Secretary of the MSLU Admissions Georgy Grachev.

The parties expressed their great interest in potential cooperation with Australian universities, considering the entire range of MSLU educational programmes. So far there are no Australian universities among 146 MSLU partner universities from 39 countries. Australia ranks third in the number of leading institutions in the world, thus, there are 36 higher education institutions in Australia in 2021 QS rankings, 7 being in the top 100.

The Australian Embassy suggested organizing an exhibition of reproductions “Evolution: Torres Strait Masks” at MSLU. The exhibition explores the ancient history of masks in Torres Strait culture and their impact on contemporary art forms. The exposition features photographs of the Torres Strait Islands, which separate Australia from New Guinea, as well as unique ritual masks of the indigenous population. Mask making is one of the most colorful traditions of the region, which has survived to this day, and Australia strives to introduce to the whole world.

Our university invited Mr. Ambassador, Australian scientists, educators and other prominent experts coming to Moscow to give talks to our students and faculty

Mr. Ambassador wrote in his follow-up letter to our rector: “I would like to once again thank the rector and management of the Moscow State Linguistic University for your warm welcome. We were all impressed by your faculty and scientific potential of your university, as well as the interior of the academic building.”
