On February 21, 2025, MSLU held an international academic seminar dedicated to International Mother Language Day. Organized in collaboration with the UN Information Centre in Moscow, the event brought together experts, faculty, and students to discuss the vital role of native languages in preserving cultural identity and promoting sustainable development.
Opening the seminar, MSLU Rector Irina Kraeva emphasized the historical and cultural importance of the day, recalling UNESCO’s 1999 proclamation in memory of the 1952 events in Bangladesh. “Language is not just a tool of communication — it is a fundamental part of a people’s history and identity,” she noted.
Vladimir Kuznetsov, Director of the UN Information Centre im Moscow, highlighted the urgent need to protect linguistic diversity, noting that over 8,000 languages exist today, many of which are endangered. He also underlined the importance of multilingual education in fostering inclusive and equitable societies.
Speakers included Dean of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting Ekaterina Pokholkova and Head of the Russian Language Department Iskra Kosmarskaya. MSLU students also presented a project on translating national folk tales into the languages of Russia and the CIS.
The seminar concluded with a discussion on current challenges and strategies for safeguarding linguistic heritage.
