MSLU Students Meet Award-Winning Brazilian Writer and Translator Rubens Figueiredo

On May 16, students of Portuguese at MSLU had the unique opportunity to meet Rubens Figueiredo — a prominent Brazilian writer, translator, and laureate of Brazil’s prestigious Jabuti Prize.

The event, held in cooperation with the Embassy of Brazil, gathered students, faculty, and guests from partner universities. Figueiredo spoke about his work translating Russian literary classics — including War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Eugene Onegin, and Fathers and Sons — directly from Russian into Portuguese. He shared insights into the linguistic and cultural challenges of rendering Russian historical realities for Brazilian readers.

The meeting offered MSLU students a rare chance to engage with one of Brazil’s most influential cultural figures in the field of literature and translation.
