MSLU Accredited by Brazil's Ministry of Education to Conduct International Portuguese Exams
28.12.2024

As of December 17, MSLU has been officially designated as a certified center for administering the CELPE-Bras, the international Portuguese language proficiency exam for non-native speakers. This accreditation was granted by Brazil’s National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP) under the Brazilian Ministry of Education.

To secure accreditation, MSLU had to meet strict criteria, including having faculty members who are either Brazilian citizens or hold advanced CELPE-Bras certification. The Department of Portuguese Language at MSLU’s Faculty of Translation and Interpreting includes two native Brazilian lecturers, Flávia Stucchi da Silva and Jéssica Martins Carvalho. In October, faculty members Zoya Dolgikh, Varvara Makhortova, Alexander Leshin, and Irina Chasovikova successfully passed the CELPE-Bras, earning certificates at the highest proficiency level (Avançado Superior). The accreditation process was spearheaded by the Head of the Department of Portuguese Language, Ksenia Nechaeva, and supported by the department's dedicated faculty members.

The CELPE-Bras is the only certificate of proficiency in Brazilian Portuguese as a second language officially recognized and developed by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. It evaluates candidates across four proficiency levels: Intermediate (Intermediário), Upper-Intermediate (Intermediário Superior), Advanced (Avançado), and Superior Advanced (Avançado Superior).

The exam is held twice a year, in spring and autumn, and consists of a written section and oral section. All exam materials are provided by INEP, and certified faculty members from MSLU’s Department of Portuguese Language will serve as examiners. Successful candidates receive an official INEP certificate verifying their proficiency level.

Becoming a CELPE-Bras examination center marks a significant achievement for MSLU, solidifying its role as a hub for Portuguese language studies in Russia and expanding opportunities for students, professionals, and language enthusiasts to gain internationally recognized certification. This initiative reflects MSLU’s commitment to fostering global education standards and strengthening academic ties with Brazil and Portuguese-speaking communities worldwide.
