On December 7, MSLU held the second scientific and practical conference, “Languages and Cultures of Northern Europe: Research, Teaching, Translation.” The event brought together over 80 participants from across the country, who presented their research both in person and online. Discussions focused on pressing issues in philology, linguistics, translation, and the teaching of Dutch, Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish.
The plenary session featured several highlights, including the presentation of the first collective monograph in Russian Scandinavian studies, An Anthropocentric Grammar of the Danish Language by E. Gurova, D. Nikulicheva, and E. Krylova. E. Dorofeeva, curator of the Scandinavian series at the "Gorodets" publishing house, also introduced the first full Russian translation of the Edda by Sofya Sviridova.
As part of the conference, a professional development program titled “Languages and Cultures of Northern Europe: Research, Teaching, Translation” was offered. Students also had the unique opportunity to attend masterclasses on literary translation conducted by experienced translators.
Returning after a five-year pause, the conference provided specialists in the languages of Northern Europe with a welcoming platform to discuss pressing issues, share research findings, and pass valuable knowledge to students. The event was a testament to MSLU’s commitment to promoting studies in this region, and it is hoped that this conference will remain a cherished tradition for years to come.
