MSLU on Sign Languages at Muzeon

26.09.2017
On September 24th, International Deaf Day, MSLU organized an “Author-Session” event at the Muzeon Park of Arts devoted to sign languages. The International Deaf Day is celebrated worldwide on the initiative of  the United Nations Organisation on the last Sunday of September, commemorating the foundation of the World Federation of the Deaf  in 1951. Professor Kira M. Iriskhanova, Ph.D. (Philology), Chair of English Stylistics at MSLU, spoke about the history of sign languages and the prospects and peculiarities of teaching deaf and audially challenged people. The event ended with several songs performed in sign language by fourth-year students of MSLU’s Faculty of English. Moscow State Linguistic University has been training sign language interpreters since 2012, its Faculty of English offering the programme “Theory and Practice of Sign Language Interpreting in Intercultural Communication”. In 2017, on the initiative of the Russian Association of Deaf People MSLU launched a new programme of professional retraining “Teacher of the Russian Sign Language”, much needed due to the lack of qualified teachers of sign languages in educational institutions. The programme will help promote inclusive education and implement sign language in schools for deaf children.
