02.04.2024

A three-day business game titled “The Model of the League of Arab States” (LAS) was held at the Institute of International Relations and Social and Political Sciences at MSLU. This format is a synthesis of a scientific-practical conference and an intellectual role-playing game.

At the opening ceremony of the model, welcoming words were spoken by Vice-Rector for International Activities of MSLU, Vladimir Storozhev; Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation, Oleg Ozerov; Director of the Institute of International Relations and Social and Political Sciences of MSLU, Dmitry Belyakov; Head of the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia, Tatyana Kashirina; Senior Advisor of the Department for European Co-operation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Dmitry Maltsev; and the Researcher of the Department of the Middle and Post-Soviet East of the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vasily Ostanin-Golovnya.

Honored guests informed the attendees about the nature of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the causes, characteristics, and stages of the Six-Day War, and emphasized the special role of the League, the UN, and the USSR in resolving the Palestinian problem. They noted the peculiarities of working with the Middle East region and shared personal experiences of interacting with regional factors.

This year, during the model, two LAS Councils were operational – a historical one (working language - Russian) and a contemporary one (working language - English). Each council had its own agenda – the Six-Day War (1967) and Practical steps towards a peaceful resolution of the Yemeni Civil War.

On the first day of the model, delegates in the Historical and Contemporary committees expressed their countries' positions on the political agenda of the event and then proceeded to create coalitions to draft final documents.

On the second day of the model, the participants compiled drafts of the working documents, which were subjected to thorough scrutiny by the members of the Secretariat. During the voting process, the document drafts were unanimously adopted. In the second half of the working day, participants of the Historical and Contemporary councils jointly developed final resolutions under the careful guidance of the experts. After making amendments, the final draft resolution was adopted.

At the solemn closing ceremony, all participants received certificates, and the most constructive delegates and the best delegations, chosen by the model participants themselves, were awarded. Vice-Rector for Youth Policy and Educational Work, Innara Guseynova, and the Associate Professor of the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia, Vladimir Fedotov, addressed the participants with concluding and parting words.
