Russia–Argentina: Progress and Prospects of Bilateral Relations

On November 17, 2016, MSLU hosted an international seminar named "Russia–Argentina: Progress and Prospects of Bilateral Relations". The seminar was organised by the MSLU Centre for Ibero-American Programmes and was attended by the Ambassadors of The Republic of Argentina, the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, the Republic of Colombia and the Republic of Costa Rica, together with other members of the diplomatic corps of Latin American countries, notable Russian scholars of the region and MSLU faculty and students.

The seminar was addressed by I.Manokhin, Acting Rector of MSLU, who spoke about the University's glorious traditions and its present-day and future international cooperation practices.

Ambassador P.A. Tettamanti of Argentina thanked the hosts and shared his views regarding different aspects of relations between his country and Russia.

The paper titled "Normalisation of relations between Russian and Argentina: 70 years of the Russian Embassy in Buenos Aires (1946-2016)" was presented by A.Sizonenko, leading researcher of the Institute of Latin America of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and was met with great interest.

The next remarks were offered by H.E.Ye.Astakhov, ex-ambassador of Russia in Argentina, currently professor of Diplomacy at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, who applied his considerable experience to analysing trends in bilateral relations between the two countries.

Next, the floor was taken by MSLU students of the Institute of International Relations and Social and Political Sciences, speaking in Spanish. They delivered papers on subjects as diverse as "The Role of Women in the Political and Cultural Life of Argentina" (M.Khadikova and Ye.Kharlamova), "Trade and Economic Cooperation between Russia and Argentina" (A.Sidorenko), "Cultural Relations between Russia and Argentina" (A.Fryshkina) and " Cooperation between Russia and Argentina in the Sphere of Energy" (A.Zakharov).

The seminar was presided over by Ya.A.Burliai, Director of the Centre for Ibero-American Programmes.
