80th anniversary of Translation and Interpreting Faculty

This year marks the 80th anniversary of MSLU’s Translation and Interpreting Faculty. Founded as a place with a focus on military translation whose graduates would interpret at the Nuremberg and Tokyo tribunals, it has evolved to service a modern multi-stakeholder economy and boast a wide network of academic partnerships.

The celebrations began on 18 January with greetings by MSLU Rector Irina Krayeva, Faculty Dean Ekaterina Pokholkova as well as the Faculty’s alumni and special guests, including experienced T&I practitioners, high officials and foreign dignitaries. At a cocktail party, a cake cutting ceremony revealed a special cake with a print of the iconic Ostozhenka campus as seen by Moscow-based artist, MSLU alumnus and professor Stepan Brand.

The celebrations continued on 26 February to bring together the Faculty’s alumni for an evening of live music. The polyglot Dmitry Petrov’s band was also there to perform world famous hits in several languages. A cocktail party that followed was an opportunity for the alumni to catch up with each other, while a quiz served to familiarize those present with lesser-known facts of the Faculty’s history.
